She had graduated from TDMC, Alleppey and had MD and MPhil in Epidemiology from the Kerala university. She retired as Head of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Medical College, Trivandrum, Kerala in May 2008 after serving Kerala Govt for 30 years. . She has been actively involved with the Programmes of government in the areas of maternal health, maternal mortality and prenatal care and reproductive infections. She was the Officer in charge of the Indian Council of Medical Research Center for Research in Reproductive Health. She has a long track record of excellence in research and clinical practice. She has special interest in safe motherhood, child survival related to fertility transition, adolescent health care and clinical trials in perinatal care. She has research collaboration with United Nations Population Fund as well as the University of Uppsala and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
